The Voice of the People
Gina Wilson Steward graduated from River Rouge High School and after graduating from Tuskegee Institute she returned to serve her community. Between being a mentor to youth in the community, Gina is the Publisher of the Telegram Newspaper, based in Ecorse Michigan. It is a community newspaper that covers news in Metropolitan Detroit with a focus on the Wayne County communities. The Telegram has been in publication since 1944 and is the oldest privately Black-owned community newspaper in Michigan.
Award-Winning Activist and Social Entrepreneur
Gina is deeply connected and rooted in the community. The impact of her leadership is reflected in the numerous awards and recognition she has received for her work. To name a few:
- 2008 Community Award from The Men’s Club of River Rouge
- 2009 Image Award for the city of Inkster
- 2013 Michigan Leading Ladies Award
- 2014 Media Award from the Detroit ARC
- 2015 W. A. SCOTT II Award from the National Newspaper Publisher Association
- 2015 The Mentor of the Year Award from the University of Michigan - Dearborn
- 2019 Media Award from the Charles Wright Museum of African American History
- 2021 Community Health Champion from Western Wayne Family Health Center
- 2022 Woman of the Year by the Zeta Phi Beta Zeta Nu Chapter.
Community Engagement
Gina believes that you have to maintain and strengthen community partnerships in order to be successful together. Her current community relationships include:
- President of the Downriver Delta CDC focusing on encouraging local communities to work as a region
- President of the NAACP Western Wayne Branch whose mission is to fight for the civil rights of people in 24 cities in Wayne County. Gina has stepped down in order to pursue the River Rouge mayoral race.
- Executive Director of The PEN Enrichment Center that focuses on improving the literacy rate of persons in the community
- Board Member at The Guidance Center whose focus is on Mental Health programs and Board member of the Michigan Press Association shares information throughout the state.
